Together with Pegasus, online magazine Donau and diaspora organisation Mara, we organise an afternoon with Belarusian poet in exile Hanna Komar and other guests to talk about poetry in the Belarusian language in the context of repression and change. We will close with a writing session for Belarusian prisoners. More information (the event will be in English).
On Friday, May 23, at bookstore Pegasus in Amsterdam, we welcome our guests the exiled Belarusian poet Hanna Komar and historian Suzanne Rademaker to discuss this topic.
In Belarus, members of the resistance movement against the regime of Alexander Lukashenko are increasingly using the Belarusian language in private circles. Although many people in Belarus are raised speaking Russian, a growing number choose to assert their identity and distance themselves from Russia by speaking and writing in Belarusian—and by raising their children in that language. Together with Hanna Komar, we will explore the importance of Belarusian poetry in this movement of resistance and change. Our second guest, Suzanne Rademaker, is a scholar of Slavic studies specializing in modern Belarusian and Russian history. In addition, members of the Netherlands-based Belarusian Book Club will reflect on the significance of poetry and literature for those forced to live far from home.
The conversation will be held in English. Poems will be read in Belarusian, as well as in English and Dutch translations. Attendance is free, donations for the organisation much appreciated

Come join us at Savannah Bay, Utrecht as we commemorate five years of resilience and resistance in Belarus. This event will shed light on the ongoing challenges faced by the Belarusian people and celebrate their unwavering spirit in the face of repression. Together, we will honor those who have fought for freedom and justice in Belarus. Join us for an evening of solidarity and reflection.
Five years ago, the first arrests happened ahead of the 2020 presidential elections, that sparked off an unprecedented wave of struggle and repression which is still ongoing. Belarusian poet Hanna Komar and members of the Belarusian diaspora will reflect on the past five years in human library style, interlaced with poetry readings in this meeting organised by Mara and LIBERECO. We will close with a writing session for Belarusian prisoners. (The event will be in English).

Show your solidarity and join us in demanding the immediate release of all political prisoners in Belarus!
Time: 18:00 to 19:00
Location: Züghusplatz Zurich
The vigils are a collaboration between Libereco, RAZAM, ACAT, Campax and Amnesty International Switzerland.
We ask all persons with a connection to Belarus to take measures for their safety and the safety of their relatives in Belarus. Libereco’s Instagram and X account have been classified as “extremist” by a Belarusian court. This may mean further repression for people in Belarus.
On 9 August 2020, Lukashenka was confirmed in office through blatant electoral fraud. This day could have been a day of hope for democratic change for the people of Belarus. After the elections, mass protests broke out across the country against the illegitimate ruler. The demonstrations were crushed only by the brutal use of force. Tens of thousands were arrested and often tortured in prison.
The persecution of demonstrators has continued over the past five years. More than 3,700 people have now been recognised as political prisoners. Sadly, the repression continues.

The founder of the Belarusian human rights centre Viasna and 2022 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Ales Bialiatski, will spend his 63rd birthday in prison on 25 September. Like four of his Viasna colleagues, he is in prison in Belarus solely because of his legitimate human rights work. Ales Bialiatski was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment in March 2023. There has been no news of him for more than two years.
Join the vigil in Zurich on 25 September to demand the immediate release of Ales and all other political prisoners in Belarus!
Time: 18:00 to 19:00
