It was an iconic summer of 2020 in Belarus. Hundreds of thousands of Belarusians protested against the rigged presidential elections. They demanded fair elections and a life in freedom. It was a moment of hope. Everywhere in Belarus. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Maria Kalesnikava und Veronica Tsepkalo – three strong women became the faces of these brave protests. The end of Lukashenka’s dictatorship seemed near.
It was a brutal summer of 2020 in Belarus. The Belarusian regime violently cracked down on the peaceful protests. Tens of thousands were arbitrarily detained. Media outlets and cultural institutions were shut down, human rights organizations were forced to disband. Today, there are still more than 1,400 political prisoners in Belarus. Belarusian prisons are torture chambers. Many have died because of the brutal conditions of detention. From others, there has been no sign of life for a long time.
Despite the severe repression, the Democratic forces of Belarus are not giving up hope. The desire for a life in democracy is too strong. The many impressive letters from female political prisoners also speak volumes of this hope. They serve as testimonies to the remarkable Belarusian resilience.
We will read these letters aloud, then discuss the situation in Belarus and how to support the Belarusian democracy movement. We, too, hold onto hope for a democratic Belarus. Our solidarity remains unbroken.
