Together with our local partner Aid 46, we are training Ukrainian first responders in haemostatic treatment methods. Faced with the ongoing war, they learn life-saving measures such as the application of tourniquets and wound tamponades.
Kharkiv has been under fire almost daily since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Russia has intensified its attacks on the country’s second-largest city over the past few months. It appears to be targeting the city’s civilian infrastructure, repeatedly hitting shopping centres and apartment blocks. Employees of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) are often among the first on the scene after an attack. They carry out rescue work, extinguish fires, and provide first aid.
In war, aid measures are now required that were previously not part of the standard SES trainings. We therefore organise training courses in which first responders are trained in haemostatic treatment methods, including life-saving measures such as applying tourniquets and wound tamponades.
Certified advanced training courses
Libereco has been working with Aid 46 in Kharkiv since spring 2024. The members of the organisation regularly support the rescue operations themselves and provide medical training for the city’s residents. Aid 46 offers certified courses for specialist staff, such as “Basic Life Support” and “Stop the Bleed”. SES is therefore already in close dialogue with them – but funding is still lacking.

Costs
The training course for one person costs the equivalent of around 70 euros. This covers the costs of supplies (e.g. practice tourniquets), room rent and the instructors’ fees.
