On 9 August 2020, Lukashenko rigged the election to confirm himself in office. 9 August could have been a day of hope for democratic change for the people of Belarus. For this reason, mass protests erupted nationwide against the illegitimate ruler in the aftermath of the elections. These could only be suppressed through brutal force. Tens of thousands were arrested and tortured in prisons.
The persecution of demonstrators has continued to this day over the past five years.

We ask all persons with a connection to Belarus to take measures for their safety and the safety of their relatives in Belarus. Libereco’s Instagram and X account have been classified as “extremist” by a Belarusian court. This may mean further repression for people in Belarus.
