Winter Relief for Kharkiv

As a result of Russia’s targeted attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the UN expects power cuts of up to 18 hours a day this winter. The long interruptions to electricity and heating supplies can be life-threatening in the cold winter months. Vulnerable groups such as the elderly, internally displaced people, and single parents face the challenge of getting through the winter without adequate energy supplies and essential resources. In the Kharkiv region, continued attacks are exacerbating the humanitarian emergency and causing continued displacements.

Our winter aid programme seeks to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and support the most vulnerable people in the Kharkiv region. Our aim is to reduce winter-related mortality, minimise health risks and ensure the supply of essential items.

Thanks to long-standing partnerships, we have a local presence and can respond quickly to emerging needs. Together, we can immediately identify and address gaps in care. Our actions include:

• Firewood deliveries: Rural households receive enough firewood to get them through the winter safely.
• Soup kitchens: During prolonged power outages, we prepare hot meals and deliver them directly to people in need.
• Emergency kits: We distribute blankets, gas stoves and food kits to the most vulnerable to meet their basic needs.

In 2024, we provided more than 1,400 people in the Kharkiv region with several weeks of food and hygiene items. In addition, our emergency response team has reacted to more than 25 attacks, providing people with basic necessities immediately after their homes have been shelled.
