We use high-quality, used windows from Switzerland to prepare damaged homes in Ukraine for winter conditions. By reusing existing windows, we protect vulnerable people from the weather and cold and conserve valuable resources.
As a result of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, the windows of thousands of residential and administrative buildings have been shattered. Many windows can only be temporarily repaired with plastic sheeting and boards, which give only limited protection against cold, wind, and moisture. Meanwhile, in Switzerland, more than 20 million square metres of intact windows are discarded every year. Many of these windows are still in very good condition and can be reused.
We want to help people who are still living in their homes despite the damage caused by the war. Their homes will be made winter-proof by installing new windows and making other repairs. In addition, public buildings that play a vital role for the civilian population (such as hospitals, community centres and schools) will be repaired by installing windows and making other repairs so that they can continue to serve their community.
Our partner RE-WIN coordinates the collection of intact windows throughout Switzerland. Together we deliver the windows to our project partner AoS in Ukraine, where they are installed in private homes and public buildings. AoS also carries out further repairs to the buildings where necessary. Our focus is always on vulnerable people who, for example due to advanced age, may not be able to carry out the installation themselves and who are also dependent on functioning community centres. By reusing used windows, resources are conserved and sustainable approaches to reconstruction are tested.
