SITUATION
Through the #WeStandBYyou campaign, we are urging everyone to show their support for those in Belarus who are fighting for free and fair elections, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. Anyone who supports those facing political persecution in Belarus can express their solidarity on social media by using the hashtag #WeStandBYyou.
The situation has further escalated following the rigged election, in which Alexander Lukashenko — who has ruled authoritarianly for over three decades — declared himself the winner. Thousands of people have been arbitrarily arrested during ongoing peaceful protests against Lukashenko across the country.
According to our Belarusian partner organisation, Viasna, more than 1,200 people are currently imprisoned solely because of their political activism, serving long sentences. Among these political prisoners are members of the Coordination Council, campaign teams of independent presidential candidates, opposition figures, bloggers, and demonstrators.
