Support for Victims of Politically Motivated Violence

Since 2020, more than 3,600 people have been recognised as political prisoners in Belarus. The conditions of detention are considered to be in violation of human rights. Political prisoners are subjected to physical and psychological abuse, malnutrition and arbitrary solitary confinement. Medical care in prison is inadequate and many political prisoners suffer from chronic illnesses due to malnutrition. Since 2020, a total of seven political prisoners have died in custody. Former political prisoners and other victims of human rights violations need psychosocial support to overcome traumatic experiences and lead normal lives. However, the state does not provide them with the appropriate treatment they need.

We provide specific assistance to victims of human rights violations in Belarus through various programmes. Our aim is to fill gaps in health care and to strengthen the physical health and resilience of those affected in the long term. We also help individuals to evacuate from Belarus to avoid further repression, imprisonment and ill-treatment.

Thanks to our long-standing cooperation, we are valued by independent Belarusian NGOs and work closely with them. This close collaboration enables us to identify service gaps and provide psychosocial and humanitarian support to those affected. Our work focuses on people who have been victims of politically motivated violence and who receive no support from the Belarusian state.
