Emergency Relief for Vulnerable Groups in Kharkiv (2024)

In the Kharkiv region, we provide vulnerable people with basic food and hygiene items, hot meals, and emergency assistance following the shelling of homes. Below, you’ll find an overview of the measures we implemented in 2024. To explore the planned measures for 2025, click here.

SITUATION

In view of the worsening humanitarian situation in Kharkiv, Libereco significantly intensified its emergency aid measures in 2024. The tense situation, triggered by increased shelling since the end of 2023 and the Russian ground offensive in May 2024, required a rapid and flexible response.

OUR GOAL

LIBERECO is committed to providing urgently needed aid to the people of Kharkiv. Our aim is to provide internally displaced persons and other affected people with essential items based on their needs. As a small organisation, we are able to respond quickly and flexibly to gaps in the humanitarian aid.

HOW WE HELPED

We were able to support a total of 7,742 people in 2024 as part of this emergency aid project for Kharkiv. The aid measures included:

“Mom-Mobile”: Humanitarian aid for single mothers with small children

Together with the Kharkiv-based organisation DVR, we provided 828 mothers with small children with needs-based humanitarian aid (nappies, baby food, personal hygiene products, etc.). The mothers were able to request low-threshold support from our partner DVR via Instagram. The “Mom-Mobile” then delivered the relief supplies directly to the residential areas.

Emergency supplies for victims of shelling

The city of Kharkiv has been exposed to frequent shelling due to its geographical location on the border with Russia. In the first half of 2024 in particular, civilian objects (hotels, private homes) in the city centre were shelled almost daily, often in the evening or early morning hours. Together with our partner WBWU, we set up an emergency service to provide victims of shelling with hot drinks, warm meals, blankets and access to electricity as well as trauma-sensitive care. In 2024, the emergency team carried out a total of 24 missions for a total of 5,400 people in the city of Kharkiv.

Food and hygiene packages for internally displaced persons and remote locations

In collaboration with our partner WBWU, we provided food and hygiene packages to a total of 1,514 people in 2024. This initiative primarily targeted vulnerable individuals in rural areas who lack access to government aid, UN assistance, or support from other NGOs. Additionally, it offered essential humanitarian aid to internally displaced persons, ensuring their most urgent needs were met following their evacuation.

As part of our ‘Winter Aid for Kharkiv’ programme, we introduced additional support measures for the people of Kharkiv.
